Affording Sober Living Is More Possible Than You Think
One of the most common barriers to entering sober living is cost. When someone is ready to take the next step in their recovery, the last thing they need is financial stress holding them back. The good news is that there are more ways to pay for sober living than most people realize.
At Rooted Co-Living in Corona, California, we work to keep our pricing transparent and accessible. But regardless of which sober living home you choose, understanding your financial options can make the process much less overwhelming.
This guide covers the most common ways people pay for sober living — and some resources you may not have considered.
How Much Does Sober Living Cost?
Sober living costs vary widely depending on the location, amenities, and level of structure. In Southern California, monthly rates typically range from $800 to $3,000 or more. Luxury sober living homes with private rooms and resort-style amenities sit at the higher end. Basic, no-frills homes sit at the lower end.
At Rooted Co-Living, the monthly rate is $1,200 per month — and that is all-inclusive. There is no security deposit required. Your monthly fee covers:
- Fully furnished bedroom (private or shared)
- All utilities — electricity, water, internet, and laundry
- Nutritious meals
- Peer support and case management
- Life skills programming
- A safe, substance-free environment
For guests who need a partial-month stay, we also offer a $40 per day rate. This flexibility is especially helpful for people transitioning from treatment who may not be moving in on the first of the month.
No hidden fees. No surprise charges. What you see is what you pay.
Self-Pay
The most straightforward option. Many guests pay out of pocket, either from personal savings, current employment income, or with help from family members. At $1,200 per month with no deposit, Rooted is priced to be accessible for people who are working part-time or rebuilding their financial footing.
If you break it down, $1,200 per month comes out to about $40 per day — and that includes housing, meals, utilities, and support services. Compare that to the cost of renting an apartment in the Inland Empire (plus groceries, plus utilities, plus furniture), and sober living is often the more affordable option, especially in early recovery when income may be limited.
Family Support
For many people entering sober living, family members are willing to help cover the cost — especially when they understand what is included and how the environment supports recovery. Parents, siblings, spouses, and extended family often see sober living as an investment in their loved one's future.
If a family member is helping you financially, we are happy to speak with them directly. We can walk them through what Rooted provides, answer their questions, and give them confidence that their support is going toward something meaningful. Scholarships and Grants
Some nonprofit organizations and recovery foundations offer scholarships or grants to help individuals cover sober living costs. These programs vary by region and availability, but they are worth exploring:
- Local recovery foundations in Riverside County and the Inland Empire sometimes offer housing assistance for people in recovery.
- Faith-based organizations — churches, mosques, synagogues, and other religious communities — may have benevolence funds or emergency assistance programs.
- Community organizations like United Way, the Salvation Army, and local nonprofits sometimes provide short-term housing assistance.
Availability changes frequently, so it is worth calling 211 (Inland Empire 211) to ask about current programs in your area. Our resources page also includes local organizations that may be able to help.
FEMA and Emergency Assistance Programs
In some cases, FEMA or state emergency assistance programs may provide temporary housing support for individuals affected by disasters or emergencies. While FEMA assistance is not specifically designed for sober living, individuals who qualify for emergency housing aid can sometimes apply those funds toward recovery housing.
Additionally, California has various emergency assistance programs through county social services offices. Riverside County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) administers several programs that may help with housing costs for eligible individuals.
SSI and SSDI Benefits
If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), these benefits can be used to cover sober living costs. Many of our guests at Rooted use their monthly benefits to pay for housing.
- SSI provides monthly payments to people with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or age 65 or older.
- SSDI provides benefits to people who have worked and paid Social Security taxes but can no longer work due to a disability.
If you are not currently receiving benefits but believe you may qualify, a social worker or case manager can help you start the application process. It can take time to get approved, so starting early is important.
Employment and Income-Based Options
Many guests work while living at Rooted. Whether it is full-time employment, part-time work, or gig work, earning income while in sober living is encouraged and supported. Working gives guests financial independence, daily structure, and a sense of purpose.
Some employment-related resources that can help:
- California Employment Development Department (EDD) — job search assistance, training programs, and unemployment benefits
- America's Job Center of California — free career services, resume help, and job placement in Riverside County
- Vocational rehabilitation programs — for individuals with disabilities who need support finding and maintaining employment
If you are currently unemployed, our team can connect you with local employment resources to help you get started. Check our resources page for direct links.
Payment Plans and Flexible Arrangements
At Rooted Co-Living, we understand that financial situations are complicated — especially for people in early recovery. While we do require payment, we are willing to work with guests on a case-by-case basis to find arrangements that work.
If you are in a situation where you need a few extra days or want to discuss your options, the best thing to do is talk to us directly. We would rather find a solution than turn someone away who is ready for recovery.
What We Do Not Accept
In the interest of transparency: Rooted Co-Living is not CalAIM-licensed, which means we do not bill insurance or Medi-Cal. Our pricing model is simple — $1,200 per month or $40 per day, paid directly by the guest or their support system.
This actually simplifies things for our guests. There is no insurance paperwork, no pre-authorization process, and no waiting for approval. If you are ready to move in, the process is straightforward.
The Bottom Line
Money should not be the reason someone gives up on recovery. Between self-pay, family support, government benefits, scholarships, employment income, and flexible payment options, there are real paths to making sober living work financially.
At Rooted Co-Living, we have made it our mission to keep costs transparent and accessible. No deposit. No hidden fees. Just a safe, supportive home where you can focus on what matters most — building a life in recovery.
